Where does Pineiro fit?

Good news on the Wainwright front, as I'm sure most of you have heard about already. He'll be starting against the Brew Crew on Wednesday after posting a 6-inning, 1-run performance in his first time out. The news has this blogger jumping for joy, even though Tony still won't commit to keeping him as a starter:
"Pencil everything in and you adjust as you go," La Russa said of fitting his rotation around the schedule. "We are trying to win games and we have got no cushion. Quite literally, we’re game to game. Look at how we’ve done it all year long. We’re not going to make adjustments to it now."
This isn't the first time we've seen wishy-washiness from TLR, and it probably won't be the last.

Another peculiar bit from Tony came out too - he's telling Joel Pineiro to prepare for his next start:
"He should be getting ready for his next start," La Russa said without clarifying when that would be. "I don’t want him to think about relief. He should think start."
Perhaps Tony is really just trying to keep Pineiro motivated by keeping him in the mentality of starting. Or perhaps there's something to this. The news on Carpenter has been encouraging, and he's due for his next bullpen session on Wednesday. If you could expect him back in the next week, this turns into talk as to whether the Cards should go with a six-man rotation. For now, it's solely whether Pineiro should keep starting with his 4.83 ERA and 4.50 FIP. With the way the off days are scheduled, the Cards could conceivably go with a 4-man rotation until mid-September, plenty of time for Carp to come back. Still, I'll post the question to you guys: With the uncertain return date of Chris Carpenter, should Joel Pineiro stay in the rotation?

By the way, congrats to Brian Barden and Team USA baseball for winning a bronze medal. They beat Japan 8-4 in the third place match. Korea beat Cuba 3-2 for the gold. Happy Monday, everyone!

  1. If Chris Carpenter is really going to make his way back into the rotation soon, I see no reason why Joel should stay in the rotation. Keeping him in the rotation only hurts our chances.
