Hey everyone! Sorry for the no post yesterday and the late post today. No, I didn't jump off a building after seeing Chris Carpenter re-injure himself on Sunday night and watching the Cards subsequently give away the game. No, it's actually college time again, and I was helping a close friend move-in all day out in Kansas City. It pains me to think that school is starting again soon, because it means I'm going to be away from the ones I love, the Cardinals, and St. Louis as a whole. I love this town, regardless of its problems and detractors, and there's no where else I'd rather be in the summer than right here. (The winter? Well, that's a different story.) As for me, I'm leaving for school in good ol' Cape Girardeau less than two weeks from now for another year of business classes. This year is going to be a big one for me, as I might be heading out to Mexico for a short-term study abroad trip. Chevere!
The Cardinals find themselves once again within striking distance of the wild card. It's our best chance to make post-season play, which makes these games with the Marlins especially important. The farther we can keep the NL East and West teams away, the better off we are in our own wild card hopes. From here on out, the Cardinals are going to be facing steep competition in every series they play. In the same manner that I am dreading a return to college, I'm sure they are a bit hesitant about facing the Brewers, D'Backs, and Cubs in the coming weeks. I'm going to further challenge myself as a student; they're going to further challenge themselves as contenders. It's something that has to be done, whether we like it or not.
As the present continues to unfold with each passing game, so does this organization's future in the minor leagues. Guys like Jon Jay, David Freese, Mark Diapoules, Jess Todd, and Daryl Jones have all made names for themselves this year. As exciting as this season has been with the big club, I can only imagine what it'll be like when these guys mature and make the big leagues. It's going to make for some exciting baseball for many years to come, and it all fits into this "working towards a bigger goal" theme we've seen this year. Kinda like college.
This summer has been one wild ride for certain. It's probably been one of the most important summers of life because of how much I've been able to grow and gain a new perspective on things. I've learned to make the most out of my time, to live in the present and not worry about things to come. Cherish the moments at the ballpark, the sunny days of summer, and being able to be by the ones you love. It's all right here, right now, kinda in the same way the Cardinals are right here, right now. They've had an incredible ride so far, so why worry about who or what lies ahead? An incredible ride so far, but they can certainly go further. Just like I can't change that "first day of school" date on the calendar, they can't change where they are in the standings, who gets hurt, or how the Brewers or Cubs fare the rest of the season. All they can change is how they're going to approach the rest of the season. Playing one game at a time has never held so true, for baseball and life.
