Former Cardinals Check-Up: Volume 2

I thought it might be interesting to see how our former Cardinals are doing deeper into the season. If you can remember, the last Cardinals Check-Up wasn't very pretty - Scott Spiezio was just released by the Braves, Jim Edmonds wasn't performing as a Padre, and Scott Rolen hadn't even played yet. Well, some time has passed, but some things haven't changed. Let's take a look at our old redbirds again in Volume 2:

Jim Edmonds - Jim, having found zero success with the San Diego Padres, was released in favor of Jody Gerut. Shortly after, a Cardinals fan's worst nightmare transpired - Jim Edmonds became a Chicago Cub. Signed to be another thumper in their lineup, the Cubs put their hope in Edmonds over the promising Felix Pie. The results haven't gone so well, though. In 20 AB with Chicago, Edmonds hasn't improved over his lackluster start in San Diego, batting .150/.190/.150 with one walk and three strikeouts. Cubs fans seem to be sick of him already. From Bleed Cubbie Blue:

One final note -- it's time to call an end to the Jim Edmonds Experiment. His lazy fly ball pinch-hitting today looked like a 60-year-old coach hitting fungoes. He's DONE.
Scott Rolen - The Blue Jays finally have a healthy Scott Rolen, that is, for now. Rolen returned from his broken finger and has hit surprisingly well since then. In 109 AB, Rolen is batting .303/.384/.477 with 2 homers and 11 RBI's. It's good to see him having success with Toronto. I'm still positive that Glaus will outperform Scott over the course of the season, however.

David Eckstein - The other part of the Toronto Tandem is not performing quite as well as expected. Eckstein is batting .256/.328/.331 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 121 AB. For a comparison, Cesar Izturis is batting .265/.362/.326 with one homer and 9 RBIs in 132 AB. Not a whole lot of difference there, except for the defense. Advantage Cardinals.

So Taguchi - Our favorite Japanese player has still failed to get it together with the Philadelphia Phillies. In 55 AB, Taguchi is batting .200/.254/.273 with no homers and only 3 RBIs. Yikes. It could be over for the 38-year-old.

Jeff Weaver - He's still with the Milwaukee Brewers organization, but no one knows how long. He has been lit up in Triple-A Nashville so far, posting a 6.69 ERA in 35 IP, including 8 home runs allowed. This is essentially Jeff's Spring Training, but that line would be horrible anywhere at any time. That said, I'm hoping he makes it to the big club soon. Better for us.

Mike Maroth - The lefty is still hanging around the Kansas City Royals organization, pitching for their Triple-A affiliate Omaha. He's only pitched 7.2 innings, recording a 12.91 ERA.

John Rodriguez - No one saw John Rodriguez when the Tampa Bay Rays visited St. Louis this month. That's because he's still plugging away in Triple-A Durham, batting .256/.337/.476 in 82 AB. The Rays' unexpected success has actually hurt J-Rod's chances.

Thanks for the updates ...

How about a Bo Hart, Jason Simontachi or Tino Martinez update?

Bo Hart was last seen with the Baltimore Orioles organization last year. He is described as a "shooting star" during his time with the Cardinals. I couldn't think of a more apt analogy. A shooting star that quickly faded.

Jason Simontacchi played last year with the Washington Nationals and had little success. He pitched 70.2 innings with a 6.37 ERA.

Tino Martinez ended his career where it should have, New York, in 2005.
