Piñeiro missed a week of workouts and his first start of spring because of tightness in his shoulder. He threw well Friday and believed he was past the trouble but he could not finish his scheduled bullpen session Sunday. Trainer Barry Weinberg confirmed that Piñeiro stopped the session and that the pitcher met with a team doctor Monday.Pineiro is due to start on tomorrow, and his status will be determined today. The Cards are running thin on pitchers once again, which could possibly make this post more relevant:
Jeff's younger brother Jered piped up yesterday, saying that the Nationals and Cardinals have expressed interest. Hard to say if that interest is current or just occurred at some point this winter.I'd say it's time to start exploring outside options for the rotation, as Clement, Mulder, and Pineiro could possibly be out at the beginning of the season. Wellemeyer, Thompson, and Parisi would be the leading in-house candidates, but if Kyle Lohse only wants a one-year deal, why not go for it? I'd take Lohse over Weaver at this point any day, even if it meant paying a few million more.
I guess we'll have an answer today on Pineiro's status, although I don't exactly have the utmost trust in our doctors. In what could amount to be a duel for a starting spot, Brad Thompson will be facing Mike Parisi today in an intrasquad game.
If it's your money, who would you sign? Weaver or Lohse?
