Cardinals get Matt Clement

Cardinals have signed starting pitcher Matt Clement to a major league deal per Bernie. No info on the contract details yet, but I suppose it could resemble the contract Kip Wells got last year. Matt Clement's stats can be found here. If it's for how much I'm guessing it is, it's a good deal in that it puts the Edmonds money to some use without tying it up in a 4 year contract of some sort.

More discussion once more info comes out...
  • The deal is reportedly worth $1.25 million with another $5.25 million that can be earned in incentives. An option for 2009 is a bit more complicated:
The Cardinals have an $8.75 million option for 2009 with a $250,000 buyout. The option would increase to $9 million and the buyout $500,000 if Clement reaches 160 innings this season; $9.5 million and $1 million for 180 innings; and $10 million and $1.5 million for 200 innings. The option would become $11 million and the buyout $2 million if Clement finishes in the top five in 2008 Cy Young Award balloting.
Hat tip to MLB Trade Rumors for the link.
  • A commenter at VEB, transcribing an interview with Mozeliak this afternoon, says that Jon Lieber and Josh Fogg are "off the radar" and weren't really being considered in the first place. I mentioned the prospect of signing Jon Lieber in this post along with Matt Clement, so getting one of the two isn't that bad. I don't know why we wouldn't consider him other than dollar issues, unless he is perceived to be broken beyond repair.
